Intracorporeal papaverine injection has been used as an outpatient procedure to assess 40 cases of impotent patients. Fourteen (35%) responded normally; sixteen (40%) had an impaired response, and ten (25%) had no response at all. Priapism occurred in one patient and spontaneous detumescence occurred after aspiration through glans penis. The technique is a valuable diagnostic tool for differential diagnosis of vasculogenic impotence. We obtained the penile pressure with a Doppler stethoscope and compared the penile-brachial index to the papaverine test for an evaluation of impotent patients.
