Based on plant ecological criteria a method has been developed to characterize quantitatively the covers of waste tips regard to their degree of contaminating the environment. The determining role of single chemical soil factors respectively the importance of the general soil conditions for the development of vegetation structure after founding of waste tips has been described. A special example is given with the role of Cr(VI)-Ions. The proposed ecological criteria to classify waste tips are prerequisites for a successful reestablishment of vegetation on the dump cover. At last possibilities and limits are discussed concerning the recultivation of municipal waste tips under the aspect of different possibilities of their further exploitation.
