Life-threatening pleural empyema in infectious mononucleosis

A girl aged sixteen years developed severe infectious mononucleosis. An acute Epstein-Barr virus infection was confirmed serologically. After a month of persistent fever, empyema of the right side of the thorax was diagnosed by radiographic examination. Although the empyema was evacuated, it continued to reappear. After operative decortication was performed the condition started to improve. No relapse has since been observed.
