Bacteriocinogenic properties of Morganella morganii

The aim of this study was to evaluate a bacteriocinogenic activity of the strains belonging to Morganella morgani genus. This activity was determined in 569 strains according to a method described by Cradock-Watson. The activity was test on McConkey agar against 16 sensitive (indicator) strains which were selectd as a result of cross testing of 100 strains belonging to Morganella morganii genus. The ability to produce bacteriocins was found in 214 (37.6%) out of all tested strains and 73 different activity patterns were observed. Active strains inhibited one to ten indicator strains. Identification of bacteriocin productions by Morganella morganii strains could be applied for intergenus differentiation of those bacteria especially for epidemiological investigations.
