To investigate the interaction between BCG and hepatitis B (HB) vaccine in neonates, 221 neonates who received HB vaccine and/or BCG were studied. They were randomly assigned to one of three groups. 80 infants in Group 1 received BCG and HB vaccine; 81 infants in Group II received only or 10 .mu.g HB vaccine; 60 infants in Group III received only BCG. Simultaneous administration of HB vaccine and BCG showed no interference between the two vaccines. Comparison of conversion rates and diameters of the infiltration and induration of local reaction at the inoculation sites after OT (1:2000) test in Group I-(1 or 2) with those in Group III indicated that HB Vaccine might enhance the effects of cellular immunity by BCG. Differences in seroconversion rates and anti-HBs titers at seven months between Group I and Group II were not statistically significant. It is concluded that BCG and HB vaccine can be administered at the same time to no disadvantage.
