Subfertile men with severe oligospermia: outcome of management

The outcome of treatment of a consecutive series of 160 subfertile men with sperm densities less than 10 million per ml attending the Urology Clinic of University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria, in a two-year period is presented. Although the common clinical associations were varicoceles, genital infection, and tubular failure, none of the accepted treatment modalities gave good results. It is suggested that in our environment this degree of oligospermia is a manifestation of irreversible stage of testicular tubular failure. In order to avoid this outcome, it is strongly advocated that seminal fluid analysis be made part of routine medical examination so as to facilitate early diagnosis before this irreversible stage is reached.
