This editorial discusses the prognosis of AIDS patients; the incubation period from HIV infection to manifestation of AIDS, the survival rates after diagnosis of AIDS and the effect of azidothymidine (zidovudine) therapy on these survival rates. Recent studies reporting an increased survival rate for persons initially diagnosed with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia are critically reviewed. Possible reasons for changes in survival rates in patients with other AIDS-related illnesses are discussed.
