Successful operation of atrial septal defect with Gilbert's syndrome--a case report

A case of successful operation for atrial septal defect in a patient with Gilbert's syndrome is presented. Gilbert's syndrome is a disorder characterized by a fundamental abnormality in the hepatic uptake of bilirubin and deficiency of hepatic glucuronyl transferase, which result in unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. In such a patient postoperative hyperbilirubinemia would be anticipated, but in our case, there was no evidence of hepatic damage and clinical complication related to hyperbilirubinemia postoperatively. Considering mechanism of Gilbert's syndrome, open-heart surgery in a patient with this syndrome is not contraindicated and postoperative hepatic failure is uncommon.
