Screening for hypertension in the town of Csongrád

A hypertension screening program was carried out on 13,772 persons (74% of the total adult population) in the town of Csongrad joint with the regular chest x-ray examintion in 1984 (tuberculosis screening). Blood pressure was found to be higher in the younger age groups of men as well as in the elderly womeen. On the basis of guidelines of the WHO, systolic hypertension was detected in 1/3 and diastolic hypertension was found in 1/6 of the population. Previously, 34% of the hypertensive patients were unaware of their illness. The prevalence rate of hypertension was elevated both in obese persons and in the subgroup of physical workers over 60 years.
