Estimating export competitiveness of chillies from Punjab State

Following an overview of the trends in India's chilli production and exports, this paper examines the export competitiveness of chillies from the state of Punjab in terms of: (i) the relative profitability of the crop in relation to its competing alternatives in the producing area; (ii) the domestic production and price competitiveness of Punjab in relation to other producing states; (iii) the export price competitiveness of the product; and (iv) Punjab's effectiveness in meeting international quality standards. Some policy measures are then suggested to promote the production and exports of Punjab chillies.
