Application of hysteroscopy in clinical practice and research of IUDs

Using the XG-2 type hysteroscope made in China, the authors observed 30 cases of IUD users without side effects, 62 cases of IUD users with side effects, mainly abnormal uterine bleeding ans/or lower abdominal pain, 3 cases of IUD users with pregnancy, and 17 cases of breastfeeding women prior to the insertion of IUD. In 54 of the 62 cases with IUD-induced side effects, hysteroscopic findings showed abnormalities (87%), including IUD anomaly (70.4%), endometrial changes (24%), and concomitant organic uterine lesions, e.g., polyps, submucous myomas (5.6%). In addition, in 46 of 60 cases with missing IUDs in the uterine cavity, the IUDs or their broken pieces were found hysteroscopically, and all were removed under hysteroscopic control. Therefore, the authors think that hysteroscopy is a valuable means for the management and research of some side effects and/or complications in connection with the use of IUDs.
