Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) is a new scheme taken up by the Government of India, the Andhra Pradesh State Government and UNICEF, aiming directly to better the lot of rural women living below the poverty line. The objective of the scheme is to increase women's incomes through organized economic activities and also to provide basic child care facilities for the children of mothers at work. A survey aimed at assessing the functioning of the DWCRA programme was undertaken. The study assessed the most popular trades adopted, procurement of raw materials, marketing facilities, estimates of income levels, and the reaction of beneficiaries towards DWCRA. It was found that: awareness of existing facilities had been heightened by the programme; provision of food to children had improved; and savings had been instigated through the opening of bank accounts. Recommendations for further improving the programme are made.
