Antimetabolites such as azathioprine, an imidazole derivative of 6-mercaptopurine, have been used as immunosuppressive agents because of their low overall toxicity. The chemical composition of thiopurines is reviewed, the drug disposition and mechanism of action, the adverse reactions and side effects and the clinical applications in dogs and cats.
