Ultrasonically guided percutaneous drainage of intra-abdominal abscesses

Attempts were made to treat 75 intra-abdominal abscesses in 67 patients by means of ultrasonically guided percutaneous puncture and drainage. Eleven of the punctures were regarded as purely diagnostic. Fifty (78%) of the remaining 64 abscesses were successfully treated in this manner. All of the treatments were undertaken under local anaesthesia with little discomfort or complications and, in particular, no mortality. The method can be recommended as the method of first choice in the diagnosis and treatment of intra-abdominal abscesses.
