Two hundred and ninety eight children with hemophilia A were studied with the purpose of knowing the incidence of factor VIII inhibitors and their influence in mortality. Detection of inhibitors was performed by the Bethesda Units (BU) method. Prevalence of inhibitors in the group was 7.7%. Twelve patientswith severe hemophilia had inhibitors, 11 with moderate hemophilia and none with mild hemophilia. If one considers only children with severe and moderate hemophilia (levels of factor VIII < 5%), incidence of inhibitors rose to 13.9%. When both groups were compared, higher prevalence of inhibitors was observed in children with severe hemophilia, which is statistically significant (p < 0.01). In 86% of cases the patients were classified as high responders (> 5 BU). Of the 275 patients without inhibitors, none had died, while one (4.3%) of the patients with inhibitors died with intracranial hemorrhage.
