Using the life-cycle approach, the problems of the girl child are summarized. A number of recommendations are put forward. Also enumerated are tasks that child health care providers can focus on to address these problems. Pertinent United Nations initiatives for the protection of women/girls are listed, in addition to the output of a pre-Congress workshop on the girl child sponsored by the International Pediatric Association, the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
