On July 14, 1995, the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Biological Response Modifiers Advisory Committee allowed activist Jeff Getty to receive a bone marrow transplant from a baboon. Many believe chances for success are small, and some suggest that active or latent pathogens that infect the baboon might infect Getty and those with whom he later comes into sexual contact. The operation is planned for October 1995. The FDA says it will continue to evaluate cross-species cellular transplant proposals, but will allow local Institutional Review Boards to decide on the merits of proposals for organ xenotransplants.
