The cardiovascular response to infusions of graded doses of norepinephrine was studied in chronically undernourished and control subjects. The increment in systolic and diastolic blood pressure was maximal in the undernourished group. The per cent increase in systolic pressure was significantly higher with the highest dose in the undernourished, while the delta rise and per cent increase in diastolic blood pressure was significantly greater in the same group for all doses infused. The findings suggest an enhanced .alpha.-adrenoceptor sensitivity to infusions of increasing doses of norepinephrine, in the undernourished subjects.
