Certain studies on experimental animals suggested a possible secretion of a factor inhibiting exocrine pancreatic secretion by the colonic mucosa. The aim of the present study was evaluation of the exocrine pancreatic function in patients with mucosal lesions during ulcerative colitis. The study was carried out on 20 patients with radiological changes involving up to half the colon, in moderately active exacerbation or in early remission, treated only with sulphasalazine. The control group included 430 subjects without digestive tract diseases. In both groups pancreatic exocrine function was assessed (volume of pancreatic juice, bicarbonte and alpha-amylase output) after stimulaton with secretin and pancreozymin, and using the test with 75 selenomethionine according to Young in own modification. In patients with ulcerative colitis a significant decrease was noted of bicarbonate and alpha-amylase output in the duodenal content after stimulation with secretin and cholecystokinin.
