Prevalence of mitral valve prolapse in 98 presumably healthy young Ethiopians

In a search for mitral valve prolapse, using echocardiography, 98 volunteer medical students and interns (65 males, 33 females) from Addis Ababa University were examined in 1986. Echocardiographic evidence of mitral valve prolapse was noted in 10 males and 3 females, an incidence of 13.3%. Eight of these 13 subjects had clicks, 2 had murmurs, and 3 were silent. Cardiac symptomatology was found to have no relationship with presence of prolapse. Pathophysiologic factors, associated diseases and possible complications are discussed.
