Evaluation of a percutaneous transhepatic prosthesis of the biliary tract based on 58 cases

Insertion of an endoprosthesis for internal biliary drainage was attempted upon 74 patients with malignant stricture of bile ducts. It was successful in 58 patients. Lunderquist-Owman endoprosthesis was inserted in 28, Rupp endoprosthesis in 10 and Surgimed type in 20 patients. The early complications (8.6%) were most often due to unstable stent positioning, while the most common late problems were lumen occlusion, migrations and tumor overgrowth of the stent (34.5%). Comparing the results we may conclude, that the internal diameter of the endoprosthesis is a major parameter and sufficient palliation of jaundice can be achieved only by means of a prosthesis with a large internal diameter.
