The rates of protein C (PC), measured by immunological (PC-I) and functional (PC-F) methods, and of fibrinopeptide A (FPA) were studied in 60 patients with nonsurgical lung neoplasms. PC values were similar to those of a control group (PC-I 107.50 .+-. 37.29%, PC-F 86.40 .+-. 18.96%) whereas FPA values were significantly increased (1.64 .+-. 2.42 ng/ml). These proteins were also studied in 27 patients with nonsurgical lung cancer 48 hr after receiving their first chemotherapy course, significant increase of FPA being observed with respect to the basal value (5.70 .+-. 8.00 versus 1.88 .+-. 2.30 ng/ml) along with significant decrease of PC-I (108.00 .+-. 27.0%) and PC-F (69.00 .+-. 34.00%) as opposed to the values previously found before chemotherapy (126.00 .+-. 35.90% and 117.00 .+-. 12.60%, respectively).
