The Trillat method of operation was carried out unilaterally on 51 consecutive patients. Fifty of these could be followed up and be examined clinically and radiologically at least one year post-operatively. The patients were subdivided into three symptoms groups: Group A consisted of 16 patients with patello-femoral instability, Group B consisted of 22 patients with patello-femoral instability and clinical chondromalacia and Group C of 12 patients with malignment (abnormal Q-angle) and/or patella alta and clinical chondromalacia. The frequencies of patella alta and reduction of the lateral displacement of the patella were uniform in the three groups. This investigation revealed that operation by Trillat's method produced satisfactory results in all patients with femoro-patellar instability without chondromalacia. In patients with not only femoro-patella instability but also chrondromalacia or isolated malalignment and chondromalacia, the therapeutic results were less satisfactory. No serious complications occurred.
