The Laboratorio Nacional de Referencia de Mycobacteria y Tuberculosis in the antituberculosis campaign in Cuba

A brief analysis of the tuberculosis problem in Cuba is made. The decrease in the mortality and morbidity and morbidity rates in values of 15.4 to 0.5 per 1000,000 population and of 52.6 to 6.4 per 100,000 population respectively in the period of 1964-1986 is emphasized. Reference is made to the participation of the National Reference Laboratory of Mycobacteria and Tuberculosis in the organization of the bacteriologic resources for the diagnosis and case finding in the laboratories of the country's network as well as the control activities of this service and the major scientific activities. Such activities consist of the introduction and implementation of new technologies linked to the main tasks developed in the investigation of different problems related to tuberculosis and mycobacteriosis.
