A high incidence of Osteochondritis dissecans in 22 Great Dane dogs, raised together from puppy-hood and fed the same diet, suggested the possibility that the disease might be either hereditary or caused by improper nutrition. Results of P's study of the early diets of more than 200 Great Danes indicate that Osteochondritis dissecans is not a heritable disease but is probably caused by imbalances of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D, and the onset of clinical signs may be triggered by mild trauma.
