Obstructive uropathies: prenatal diagnosis and management

Recent contributions on intrauterine diagnosis and treatment of obstructive uropathies have prompted us to review and report on our own cases. Over the last six years, 18 cases had been diagnosed prenatally as having obstructive uropathy. Of these, the diagnosis was confirmed postnatally in 13 (72%). Involvement of the UPJ accounted for 28%, with a good prognosis following postnatal surgery. Similarly, early diagnosis afforded a good prognosis in those with uretero-vesical involvement (39%). However, in low obstructive uropathies involving the urethra (33%), the outcome depended on whether this condition was associated with other malformations. The possibilities of utero treatment are discussed.
