The results of two methods of below-knee amputations, the sagittal method by Persson's method and the long posterior flap by Burgess' method are evaluated in a retrospective study as regards the pre-operative measurement of the skin perfusion pressure. The material comprizes 381 below-knee amputations. Skin perfusion pressure was measured in 309 extremities of which 166 were operated by Burgess' method and 143 by Persson's method. No significant difference between the two operative methods could be demonstrated. The occurrence of diabetes mellitus was the same in the two groups and was without influence on wound healing. Skin perfusion pressure only is of conclusive consequence in wound healing.
