The effect of a single progesterone administration in early pregnancy of sows on the glycogen concentration of the endometrium

A trial was conducted with 37 gilts, aged 8-10 months, of which 5 were injected with 50 mg progesterone (group 1) 12 days after insemination, 6 were injected with 25 mg progesterone 11 days after insemination (group 2), and the remainder received no treatment (controls). Gilts in group 1 were slaughtered on day 15 of gestation, gilts in group 2 were slaughtered on days 13, 19 or 20, and controls on days 13, 15, 19 or 20. Compared with controls, the glycogen concentration in the endometrium 3 days following, progesterone treatment was 50% higher for gilts in group 1 and 25% higher for those in group 2, but 8-9 days after treatment there were no significant differences between treated femalefemale and controls. It was concluded that even a short-term increase in glycogen concentration in the endometrium in early pregnancy may lead to a significant improvement in implantation.
