A 64-year-old man presented after acute onset of florid symmetrical synovitis of his hands. There was marked pitting edema of the hands, early flexion contractures of the fingers and there had been transitory involvement of other joints. Rheumatoid factor was negative. He responded very well to corticosteroids. This clinical picture is similar to that in 19 patients recently presented by D.J. McCarty, mostly men, whose average age was 71. They too had marked edema, flexion contractures of the fingers, and were negative for rheumatoid factor. All except one recovered after treatment with corticosteroids.
