Mindful of the statistics of violence against women this issue of the Gender and Development journal focuses specifically on violence against women. Eight papers are presented on a variety of topics: female genital mutilation; early marriage; abuse and beatings within the home, and rape and sexual assault, by partners, acquaintances or strangers, in 'formal' armed conflict and as racist violence against minorities. A variety of countries are examined: Indonesia; India; UK; former Yugoslavia and Albania; Nepal; West Africa; and South Africa.
