A review of the current situation and recent progress in conducting censuses and demographic surveys in developing countries is presented. Information is included on the geographic distribution of countries that have conducted a census, principal subjects covered by censuses, satisfactory aspects of censuses and areas where further work is needed, the relationship between censuses and surveys, and the different types of survey methodology used.
