Acute epiglottitis in children and adults

This is a retrospective study of 75 patients conducted in the period December 1972-June 1986 at the University Hospital of central Norway in Trondheim. 70% of the patients were children 0-14 years. 86% of the blood cultures collected from the children grew Haemophilus influenzae. In the adult group only 36% of the blood cultures were positive. Given the lack of evidence of bacteriemia, it can be asked whether all the patients with negative blood cultures, really did have acute epiglottitis, and were not suffering from acute laryngitis.
