Endoscopic local hemostasis with hypertonic saline-epinephrine solution injection for upper gastrointestinal bleeding

During a 12-month study period in the Mennonite Christian Hospital [Taiwan], 17 consecutive patients with non-variceal upper grastrointestinal bleeding were treated by endoscopic local hemostasis with a hypertonic saline-epinephrine solution. There were 10 cases of duodenal hemorrhage, 5 of gastric hemorrhage and 2 cases of bleeding near the anastomotic site. Hemorrhage was successfully stopped in 16 cases; one case went to surgery. They were followed up at OPD. This study provides a cheap, effective and technically simple alternative treatment for non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding. It is a procedure recommended for all endoscopists who are interested in therapeutic endoscopy.
