Serotyping of strains of Candida albicans isolated from children with acute lymphoid leukemia

Determination of biotypes was performed on 107 strains of C. albicans isolated from that swabs, faces, urine of 19 children suffering from acute lymphotic leukemia (during intensive course of treatment) basing on the following tests: killer system, API 20C AUX and resistance to antimycotic agents. Thirty six types were differentiated with the aid of the killer system. Using API 20C Auxnogram 6 biotypes were differentiated indicating that occurrence of various types of strains in 8 children, depending on material tested and source of C. albicans isolation. Strains isolated from 5 children were characterized by different resistance patterns. The methods applied in this study seen to be useful in typing of Candida sp. strains, however more standardization of the method is required to assure their applicability in epidemiological studies.
