Fungal keratitis (keratomycosis) is an uncommon corneal infection which usually follows corneal penetration by a foreign body. Demonstration of the fungi is difficult and deep scraping of the corneal stroma or even corneal biopsy are often needed. Staining with KOH-ink is simple, rapid and highly reliable. We report 2 cases of fungal keratitis in apparently healthy men, 41 and 46 years old, respectively, with no history of ocular trauma. The infection was resistant to local and systemic broad-spectrum medication, and corneal transplantation was eventually required to preserve useful vision. The importance of prompt diagnosis and early medical and surgical treatment is emphasized.
