Autoimmune thyroiditis in patients with non-toxic goiter

The prevalence of AIT in patients with non toxic goiter was found to be 28.9 per cent. The majority of AIT patients (41.4%) presented with Hashimoto-like goiter while 22.4 per cent and 36.2 per cent of them presented with multinodular and diffuse goiter, respectively. The frequency of positive McHA titer was 87.9 per cent and TgHA titer was 58.7 per cent. Primary hypothyroidism was detected in 27.6 per cent of AIT and in only 1.1 per cent of non AIT patients. Abnormal perchlorate discharge test was demonstrated in 9 out of 35 AIT patients. Fine needle aspiration biopsy was performed in 10 patients with AIT and all showed lymphocytic thyroiditis.
