The effect of sexually transmitted diseases on the reproductive processes

The effect on reproduction processes, mother and child of infections caused by viruses and bacteria and transmitted also by sexual way has been reviewed. Besides other viruses (cytomegalo-, herpes-, papilloma virus) the author deals emphasized with the problem of the spread during pregnancy of the infection caused by human immune deficiency virus (HIV), with check examination and other obstetrical and gynecological respects. The mechanism of the premature delivery inducing effect of maternal genital infection due to bacteria has been reviewed in details and among several other potential pathogens the obstetrical effect (pre-, intra-, and postnatal) and significance of Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum were analysed thoroughly. Venereal diseases which can be considered as classical (gonorrhea, syphilis, lymphogranuloma venereum) were left out of the discussion.
