The functional significance of pressure sensation conveyed to abutment teeth and supporting mucosa was evaluated using an electromyograph and kinesiograph. Eleven subjects compared four different types of removable partial dentures that varied in the absence or presence of occlusal rests and the number of molars on the extension base. When comparing cycle time and other parameters, there was a significant difference in the masticatory movements of those subjects wearing completely tissue-borne prostheses as compared to those patients wearing prostheses with occlusal rests.
