Status of women as related to family planning

A KAP study was conducted among 1874 married women of reproductive age in certain areas of India to examine the hypotheses that certain aspects of the status of married women, such as their decision-making power, self-reported status within home and community, educational status, and employment status, are positively, related to the knowledge, attitude, and practice of family planning. Data confirmed the hypotheses except in the case of employment status. Employment status also showed no significant correlation with fertility. A sizeable percentage of women cannot practice contraception because of objections raised by their husbands. It is necessary to integrate family planning activities with women's emancipation. Ways and means should also be developed to encourage husband-wife communication and joint decision making with regard to family planning matters.
