From 1977 to 1985, 54 patients with Kala-azar were admitted to hospital in New Delhi, India. In all patients, Leishman-Donovan bodies were demonstrated in bone marrow-aspirates and/or liver biopsy. One third of the patients came from non-endemic areas and none had visited an endemic area. Jaundice and hyperbilirubinaemia were seen in 7 patients. 14 of the patients who were treated with sodium antimony gluconate at 10 mg Sb/kg/day for 10 days relapsed after treatment; 5 patients had 2 relapses and 3 had 3. One patient relapsed after treatment with pentamidine isethionate at 4 mg/kg/day for 14 days.
