In a retrospective study covering a period of 10 years, 48 (34.8%) out of 138 deaths in a Psychiatric hospital population in Nigeria resulted from acute organic brain syndrome. Most cases were due to infective processes. Young adults in their twenties were mostly affected; 20.8% of the 48 cases were referred by Medical Practitioners who failed to recognise the organic basis of the Psychiatric manifestations. The need to pay more attention to the physical assessment of patients with psychiatric symptoms is emphasized.
