In the present study we have evaluated the effects of pituitary apoplexy and its therapy on the pituitary-hypothalamic function. In 5 patients with tumoral pituitary apoplexy, a functional study was performed before medical or surgical therapy and after it. The pretreatment study showed a deficiency of gonadotropins in all cases, and of growth hormone in all 3 studied cases; ACTH and prolactin were the less impaired hormones. No hormonal deficiency previous to therapy was corrected after it. We conclude that apoplexy results in definitive pituitary damage with irreversible functional compromise in spite of early therapy.
