A new method of rapid diagnosis known as Microstix - Candida was used to examine 30 children with prolonged relapsing conditions of the outer and middle ear. Positive results were obtained in 8 cases as compared with 10 cases positively diagnosed by the usual methods. Small volumes of secretions are sufficient for the tests and diagnosis can be done within 24 h. Two drops of wetting liquid are placed on a strip with nutrient and the ear secretion is placed on the indicator region of the strip. Brownish stains are formed if Candida spp. are present.
