Bronchoplasty--an important alternative for lung resection

During the period 1976-1985, pulmonary resections with and without bronchioplastic interventions were undertaken on three patients with benign tumours, one patient with a mucoepidermoid tumour and 11 with carcinoid tumours. A total of 45 pulmonary segments were saved in ten patients aged 15 to 74 years. Three patients could be treated oepratively without loss of pulmonary tissue. In all of the patients, normal ventilation was found postoperatively but normal perfusion was found in two patients only. It is concluded that bronchial resection is an important alternative to conventional pulmonary resection in the tumour forms mentioned above.
