A classification of epileptic syndromes is necessary, not just for purposes of communication, but with the pragmatic goal of an appropriate utilization of treatment and/or its judicious withholding and the setting of prognosis in an individual patient. The author presents a proposal for classification of the epilepsies done by the Commission on Classification and Terminology of the International League Against Epilepsy.
