Growth in Thai asthmatic children

The asthmatic child has often been found to present a more or less retarded growth in height and weight. Cohen and Cohen and Abram were among the first to state that asthmatic children are likely to present a reduced growth in height and a rather slender physique(152). Subsequent workers who studied growth in asthmatic children confirmed that some children with asthma were retarded in growth, and that this trend was more evident in severe patients(3-4). However, this effect is accentuated by prolonged systemic administration of corticosteroid drugs(3,5-7). The purpose of this study is to evaluate: (1) the growth of Thai asthmatic children. (2) the effect of severity of the disease on growth. (3) the effect on growth in asthmatic children after receiving allergy treatment of asthma for 3 years.
