The obese strain of White Leghorn chickens has spontaneous chronic thyroiditis characterized by infiltration with mainly large mononuclear cells, the occurrence of a greater number of germinal centres in the thyroid gland, and the presence of circulating thyroglobulin autoantibodies. Bursectomy on the day of hatching resulted in a decrease in the incidence and severity of the disease 7 weeks later.
