Efficacy and tolerance of long-term naftidrofuryl treatment of patients with senile dementia. Controlled study versus placebo

A long term double blind clinical trial was carried out in a group of mild SDAT patients (10 M, 20 F, mean age 76 years), for whom the diagnosis had been made according to Mc Kahn's criteria. Naftidrofuryl or placebo were given 200 mg t.i.d. for 12 months, after a wash-out period of one month. Dementia Scale by Blessed et al. target symptoms, Stuard Hospital Geriatric Scale, GRS for dementia syndrome by Gottfries, Hamilton Depression Scale and a specific battery of psychometric tests were monitored at baseline and after 2,4,8,12 months. The pharmacologically treated group showed a clear improvement particularly, in the psychometric tests whereas placebo treated group was not so clearly modified. The data of this study indicate the clinical effectiveness and the good tolerability of naftidrofuryl, when the drug is administered to mild SDAT patients in a correct and appropriate dosage and for a sufficiently long period.
