The history of malaria control in Delhi, India, is reviewed. It can be divided into 3 eras: the pre-DDT era of success (1936-46); the DDT era (1947-57), which was a time of complacency; and an era of retrogression (1958-86). The various factors contributing to malaria and mosquito problems in urban Delhi are analysed and the roles of institutions and organisations involved in malaria control are discussed.
