Eleven nutrition-dependent indices (body weight, arm muscle circumference, triceps skinfold thickness, serum albumin, transferrin, prealbumin, creatinine and triglycerides, haemoglobin, total lymphocyte count and skin tests) were tested in 184 haemodialysis patients 14 to 85 years old. The relations of the nutritional indices to 12 other variables, including mortality during 1 year, were then studied. Serum prealbumin seemed to be the best nutritional indicator as it was related to 5 others. The critical threshold for plasma prealbumin which was associated with an increased occurrence of complications was 0.30 g/litre.
